“More Americans say they have no religion.” http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29585222/?GT1=43001

I’m one of those in-the-minority yuppie Gen EXers that loves to go to church. I love MY church, not necessarily the establishment of western religion and organized faith, but MY second family. I love to meet up with my ‘tribe’ (as a good friend of mine puts it) every Sunday and talk about what amazing things God is doing through us and around us. My life is much fuller due to my faith, and that is what it is all about for me. For me, God is very real, and it makes living each day a beautiful thing.

If it is so great and rewarding to be a part of Jesus’ posse, why is it that more and more people are turned off by Religion? Books and books have been written about the fall of our generation and why people are turning their backs on Christianity as a viable faith. I am of a personal belief that we as Christians are often to blame due to our attitudes and horrible representation of what Christ is really all about.
This scripture was read in church the other day and it made me stop and think even more. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23)
If this is the definition of the outward signs of a Christian, I would argue that everyone would be on-board. Who doesn’t want to be this sort of person? The reality is that the end result of Christ in our lives should result in this fruit. If we don’t bear this fruit, I would argue that we are practicing empty religion.
What is wrong when we see ‘God save me from your followers’ and ‘God is just pretend’ bumper stickers plastered on cars? Is it any wonder people think faith is make-believe when the numbers just don’t add up and there is no positive fruit?
I thought about how the world would define the fruits of the spirit as they see them in the lives of ‘Christian’ people today.
But the fruit of the Spirit is judgementalism, hate for sinners, politically motivated, self-righteous, only caring about conversion, un-accepting, close-mindedness, and impatience.”
Give me none of that. Give me the truth that sets me free.

Lord, help me bear your fruit. Work through me to represent You in the best possible light. If everyone on earth could feel the joy that I have inside from knowing You, they would understand.
